I am now equipped with a VONAQ QUICKTEST 100 ADSL2+ tester which reads from the line Up and Downstream line parameters, such as Max Bit rate, Interleaved Bit rate, Signal to Noise Margin, Power and Attenuation.
These readings as well as comparison between connection speeds at various points on your telephone system, can be helpful in diagnosing problems. Testing at the BT test point in the 'master socket' should ensure that you are testing out on the BT line, without any thing else being connected. I have known this not to be the case in some installations, which have had extensions or alarms added prior to the 'test socket'. Assuming that there are no other influences on the line at the 'BT Test Socket', that should be the fastest speed that your line is capable of. If it differs drastically from the speed that you are getting wherever you are connecting your Modem or Router, then there is a problem with your household wiring. Once I have downloaded that information I can send it to a PC and produce reports if necessary.
